Pet Grooming Tools

There is an endless variety of pet grooming tools to make grooming your pet easier for the professional groomer as well as those who want to groom at home. Petco and Petsmart certainly stock a lot of these products and there are many catalogs and websites you can check out. From bath products to nail polish, it's all out there.

For bathing alone the selection is amazing. There are herbal, medicated, flea and tick, hypoallergenic, and regular shampoos to choose from. For the pet with very sensitive skin, the hypoallergenic products work well. Some of these are even soap free. For the people who want organic products, there are several lines of shampoos and conditioners you can buy. Oatmeal, aloe, chamomile and honey are eco friendly ingredients, and they sound yummy. Your pet will feel like she's getting a true spa experience. There are even scrubs for dry flaky skin and exfoliants that work well on the Chinese crested dogs. These guys have no hair to speak of and are afflicted with blackheads. Blackheads, can you imagine? They also need sunscreen or a cute little t shirt to protect their skin. Yes you can buy that too. You can even get cool sunglasses or goggles for the photosensitive pet.

You will also need brushes and combs depending on your pet's coat. Combs can be wide tooth for detangling or very fine to remove fleas. Brushes are soft or wire tooth. The wire slicker brushes work well on schnauzers and pets with a similar coat. Dematting tools can resemble a rake and should be used with care. They are very sharp and should not be placed directly on the skin. Various shedding blades and tools are great for the dog with a downy undercoat. Some resemble the curries commonly used on horses. The furminator looks like a big clipper blade on a rubber handle and works wonders to remove loose hair. I would not be without one. My dog is a shedding machine and this tool works like a charm. Best of all, many pets enjoy it. Who doesn't like their back scratched?

If you are the brave person who clips your own dog, clippers and accessories abound. Some have a power boost which is great for very thick coats. The cordless ones are nice. They do have to be charged, but they are very quiet and nice for grooming the nervous pet. There are also tiny clippers that resemble a beard trimmer that work really well around the face. These can be corded or cordless. scissors are often used by professional groomers. If you are not proficient, be careful. These are really sharp and can result in a wound that will need to be sutured. Veterinary hospitals treat many pets yearly due to an overzealous use of scissors in untrained hands. You can sometimes use your fingers, but a little hemostat is good for removing that pesky hair inside the ear canal. Poodles are particularly prone to this. Plucking the hair keeps the ears much cleaner and less infection prone.

Nail trimming is the bane of many dog's and cat's existence. Small dogs don't like their feet touched and can be like handling a bag full of worms. They wiggle and squirm and can be harder to clip than a larger breed. It's a good idea to have some quik stop available in case you happen to hit the blood vessel. In a pinch, you can use a bar of softened soap to rake across the nail, sealing the cut. Cats should be clipped with little scissor type trimmers. Their nails are shaped differently from a dog's nail. There are also grinders to smooth the edges of the nails after trimming. These take time and patience to learn to use, but they do a nice job. While we're on the subject of nails, you can purchase nail caps for your pet. They are soft rubber caps placed over the nails after trimming and even come in colors. These are tricky to apply on cats, but they do work.

Now you will think it sounds silly, but most veterinarians advise you to brush your pets' teeth. "Aw, just give them a bone", the old folks would say. The fact is that small breeds in particular are predisposed to dental problems. Dogs with crooked teeth or those who only eat a soft diet need some help in the dental department. There are tartar control food, biscuits and chew toys. These help, but they don't replace the good old fashioned toothbrush. They have a longer handle to protect your fingers and many come with a finger brush. It slides over your finger and works nicely for cats and tiny dogs. Don't use human toothpaste. It can be upsetting to the digestive system. Pet toothpaste comes in yummy liver, chicken, or fish flavor. Sounds disgusting to us, but it eases the pet into having someone brushing their teeth. There are dental scalars available to remove tartar, but I'd leave that to the professionals.

You are now armed with everything you need to make Fluffy beautiful, so go for it.
